24 November 2013 :
Malam Mesra MACP
MACP’s annual dinner & awards presentation was successfully held on 24 November 2013 (Sunday), at the Hotel Royale Bintang Damansara, Petaling Jaya. YB Dato’ Sri Shabery Cheek, Minister of Multimedia and Communication was the Guest of Honour.

In the Welcome Address by Pn Habsah Hassan, MACP Chairperson, she took the opportunity to present 3 requests for YB Dato’ Sri consideration. The requests were to increase the royalty fee for the use of music by RTM and other Government agencies and Ministries; to increase the use of local music in RTM and to provide job opportunities to MACP and KOPSTAR members in music scoring, compositions, production of TV programs, supply of sound and light equipment.

The Minister agreed to consider these requests favourable and also made a surprise announcement a RM10,000 contribution towards the dinner.

WARIS opened the show with his hit “Rembau Most Wanted”. The other performers were Ayu OIAM, Kaka & RJ, Mojo Band, Gowri & Harikumar and Wu Jia Hui performed at the event. Nassier Wahab, Nora & Fairuz Hussein performed a medley of Adnan Abu Hassan’s hits in the tribute segment for this year’s Nadi Cipta recipient.

Datuk Ramli Sarip, Najwa Latiff, Dahlan Zainuddin, Effa Rizan, Edry KRU, Fida Ibrahim, Audi Mok and Farhan AF were amongst the presenters that evening.

October 2013 :
Raids on Unlicensed Outlets
In the month of October, the Enforcement Division of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC), assisted by CyberSecurity Malaysia and MACP, successfully conducted two raids on premises located in Klang Valley.

On 3 October 2013, the first raid and seizure was carried out on an outlet located at Kompleks Metro Pudu, Fraser Business Park in Kuala Lumpur; followed by the second raid on 25 October 2013, on a Family KTV Karaoke in Kota Damansara.

Despite several warnings and legal notices, both outlets had refused to obtain a MACP licence for the publicly performing musical works at their premises which constitutes an offence under S41(3) of the Copyright Act, 1987.

Among the musical works identified to be publicly performed without MACP’s permission, included popular songs composed by its members Dato M Nasir, Habsah Hassan, Kenny Tay, Sani Sudin, S Amin Shahab, Juwie, A Ali, Ramli Sarip and many others.

MDTCC seized TV monitors, karaoke systems and servers, CPU, microphones, speakers and modems from the outlets. If convicted under the Copyright Act 1987, the owners of the premises face fines ranging from RM10,000 – RM50,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, or both.
   
   
   
19 October 2013 :
MACP Mini Sports 2013
Teams from Astro, Media Prima, Karyawan and MACP members, including directors and staff participated in the inaugural MACP Mini Sports held on 19 October 2013 at Sports Arena Sentosa, Kuala Lumpur. Amongst some of the MACP members who took part were Shah Slam, Khai AF, Neves Pretty Ugly, Zul 2 by 2, Zimi Sofarz, Idea Moin, Saida AF, Maya and Ani Mayuni.

This friendly tournament saw the 5 teams compete in badminton, futsal, table tennis and netball. Media Prima was the Overall Champion winning the table tennis (team) and badminton (ladies – singles & mixed doubles) events, whilst the Astro and Karyawan teams grabbed the netball and futsal team events. MACP’s Shah Slam took the badminton (men singles) whilst Karyawan players Jegan & Azizul grabbed the badminton men doubles.

Pn Habsah Hassan later presented the medals and souvenirs to the players.
   
   
23 - 26 September 2013 :
22nd CISAC CIS Sessions
CISAC organized the 22nd CIS Sessions in Kuala Lumpur with over 80 representatives from 36 societies.

Common Information System (CIS) is a set of common technical tools and standards to facilitate the exchange of information about works and their usage between right holders with societies and between societies and other third parties such as broadcasters, digital service providers and record companies.

The participants discussed on the developments of CIS to help ensure royalties are efficiently distributed back to the creators. CIS Sessions are held twice a year and included workshops on Global Repertorie Database (GRD), Digital Data Exchange (DDex), Common Works Registration Format (CWR), International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) and International Standard Music Work Codes (ISWC).

MACP hosted a dinner reception for the delegates on 25 September. The CIS Sessions was last held in Kuala Lumpur in 2008.
   
   
20 August 2013 :
MACP appointed Strategic Partner of UUM
MACP was officially appointed as a strategic partner of University Utara Malaysia (‘UUM”) at a Raya Open House cum Programme Launching ceremony in Kuala Lumpur. YB Dato Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Education II launched the Degree in Creative Industry Management (Honours) course which includes components in management, creativity, business and technology in the film, music, animation and media production. As a strategic partner, MACP will act as an advisor to the programme besides offering industrial training placement and assisting in their research.
   
   
19 August 2013 :
MACP speaks at Royal Malaysia Police College Kuala Lumpur
Chan Miew Lan, General Manager, MACP conducted a 2-hour lecture on “Protection and Collective Management of Rights in Music” at the Police Academy in Cheras recently. The lecture was part of the Intellectual Property Crime Investigation course held from 19 to 23 August 2013. About 30 personnel of the ranking Inspector to Assistant Superintendent from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department from various states in the country attended the training.

MACP 23rd AGM
Mr Eric Yeo from Indie Works Sdn Bhd and Mr Ang Swee Giap of Like Music were elected as new publisher directors at the 23th AGM held on 27 June 2013. At the same meeting, En Ahmad Izham Omar, En Johan Mohamed Nawawi, Dato’ Mohd Nasir bin Mohamed and En Abdullah bin Mamat were also re-elected to the Board for a new 2-year term. The meeting also adopted the audited Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2012 and the Reports of the Directors and Auditors thereon after Chairman, Pn Habsah Hassan gave a report on the financial results and performance of the Company.

Messrs. Ernst & Young was also reappointed as the Company’s auditors. The notice of meeting together with the audited accounts and the Circular was circulated to members on 5th June 2013.

Members also took the opportunity to discuss certain issues such as licensing of on-line radio stations and mamak shops, calls to increase license fees paid by the Government for the use of the music, disciplinary action against members whose conduct are prejudicial to the interest of MACP, distribution sampling and a proposal to increase the UPA amount.
   
   
22 - 23 May 2013 :
Cipta Ekspres 2013
Motivated to compose pop modern songs for Dato Siti Nurhaliza’s forthcoming album, 20 established and promising songwriters came together to create songs for Dato’s selection.

This year’s composers’ workshop attracted participation from composers such as Ajai, Adnan Abu Hassan, Audi Mok, Wan Zul, Aidit Alfian, Marlin Parabakaran, Adi 6cents, Awi Rafael, Saidin Omar and Ana Raffali who were paired with lyricists S Amin Shahab, Sheikh Qalam, Ad Samad, Keon, Cek Kem, Abie, Rudy Imran, Amylea AF, Jeff A to Z and Tesh RS.

Aubrey Suwito who was appointed by Dato Siti as the producer conducted a briefing on the first day and explained Dato’s plans for the new album. He stressed the importance of a strong and unique melody with positive and inspiring lyrics.

All in 15 new songs were created during this workshop and Dato Siti attend the pre-listening of the songs after the rain disrupted the jam session. According to inside sources, Dato Siti will perform one of the songs at her forthcoming concert with Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra from 5 to 7 July 2013.

The workshop was held at Residence Desa Resort, Port Dickson and organized by MACP’s MDF Committee.
   
   
10 May 2013 :
Visit by Director General, Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce of Thailand
Mrs Pajchima Tanasanti, Director General, Department of IP, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand and her officers, Ms Wanpen Nicrovanachumrus, Director of Office of Central Administration and Mr Porsche Jarumon, Trade Officer, IP Promotion & Development visited MACP’s office in early May. During the 2-hour visit, Ms Chan Miew Lan, General Manager, MACP gave a presentation on the development and operations of MACP and took questions and shared ideas and experiences on collective management in their respective countries. It was noted that there are currently more than 10 active collective management organisations (CMOs) operating in Thailand.

Malaysian Tamil Musicians Awareness Seminar
Ms Chan Miew Lan, General Manager MACP was invited as a speaker at the Malaysian Tamil Musicians Awareness Seminar. Organsied by Irama Bayu Production at AK Centre of Human Excellence, Puchong, Selangor, the one-day event serves to inform, educate and bring awareness to local Tamil musicians, artistes, songwriters on the Tamil music industry. Topics covered included tools and methods of composing music today, theory of songwriting, artiste management, business and marketing opportunities in the local Tamil music industry, MACP & rights of authors and artistes.

The seminar was attended by 50 artistes with Yogi B as a special guest who shared his personal experiences in successfully developing his music career in South India.
   
   
28 March 2013 :
MACP Contributes to Lahad Datu Fund
MACP made a contribution of RM20,000.00 to the Tabung Wira Lahad Datu Media Prima Fund. At a brief ceremony at Sri Pentas, MACP Chairman Pn Habsah Hassan said the sacrifices of the brave men in the armed forces who protected the country during the Lahad Datu incursion were much appreciated.

“We hope our donation will at least ease the burden of the families of the fallen heroes and we hope their families will stay strong” said Pn Habsah.

Media Prima Television Networks Chief Operating Office, Mr Ahmad Izham Omar accepted the donation on behalf of the fund.

MACP, PPM & RPM Certified as Licensing Bodies
In an historical event, three music-based collecting bodies at a joint Press Conference announced their certification as Licensing Bodies under the Copyright Act 1987 by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), an agency under the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism today.

Under the new Copyright (Amendment) Act 2012 and Copyright (Licensing Body) Regulations 2012, the certified licensing bodies are Music Authors’ Copyright Protection (MACP) Berhad, Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PPM) and Recording Performers Malaysia Berhad (RPM).

The Chairpersons of the 3 Licensing Bodies, Pn Habsah Hassan (MACP), Mr Adrian Lim (PPM) and Dato Sheila Majid (RPM) thanked the Government of Malaysia and MyIPO for their support and recognition.

Pn Habsah said that the recognition will encourage MACP to work harder for more revenue to be distributed to the songwriters and music publishers who remained united under MACP for over 23 years.

MACP was the first body to be certified as a Licensing Body in September 2012.

As part of our continuous efforts to provide better services and for good transparent practices, MACP is pleased to inform that we are making available works information at our website accessible from the Work Search menu.

Members of the public can now check the titles and the names of the composer/s, lyricists/s and publisher/s of songs kept in MACP’s database.

MACP members can check details of your compositions, verify the share percentages and notify us of any discrepancies, if any. MACP members can also register new works with MACP online.

At the same time, MACP members can check and update your personal details such as address and contact numbers to ensure such information kept by MACP is correct and up-to-date.

Members of the public do not need a password to perform a work search. However, for first time log-in by MACP members, you need to obtain your User Name and Password from Kak Shah via email to aishah@macp.com.my.
