Tan Sri P.Ramlee, Legend of the Ages

National Artist Day which is celebrated today, 22 March in conjunction with the birth date of the Great Artist, the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee not only commemorates his services and contributions but according to Tan Sri Annuar Musa, Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (K-KOM), this celebration is celebrated to improve the community's awareness and appreciation of the role of cultural arts in creating a Malaysian society that has its own identity and respects the country's cultural arts regardless of race, especially towards the unification of the Malaysian Family.

Malaysians need to know about the awareness of the value of artistry in the Great Artist who until now has no substitute. This great person is not only known as an actor, the deceased is also a director, songwriter, lyricist and a very great musician and a person who is poetic in his work, making him a very valuable and constantly fresh national treasure.

Changing the date of the National Artist Day celebration commemorates his service and contribution to the country's creative industry and even highlights his work that not only introduced Malaysia to the world but also produced many figures, especially other artists and experts in the creative industry in our homeland.

This great artist of the heart of the people of Malaysia, the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee or his real name Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh, who is also a member of the MACP, was born on March 22, 1929 in Georgetown, Penang. Awarded "Great National Artist" for his great service in the film industry, music as well as his literary works, he is remembered as a prominent icon in the Malaysian entertainment industry. His fame also expanded to the Southeast Asian region.

He has acted in 66 films including the Bujang Lapok film series (1957-1961), Tiga Abdul (1964), Laksamana Do Re Mi (1972) and he also composed over 250 songs such as Getaran Jiwa, Aci Aci Buka Pintu, Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti, Jeritan Batinku and Air Mata di Kuala Lumpur which were the last songs he recorded before his passing.

On May 29, 1973, the great artist who was 44 years old at the time, breathed his last at Kuala Lumpur Hospital due to heart disease. Jalan Ampang Islamic Cemetery is the location where the dead bodies are buried. In memory of his various services and contributions to the country, he was awarded the Grand Star of the rank of Loyal Commander of the Crown by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on June 6, 1990 which carries the title of Tan Sri. In addition, his last house in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur was renovated and turned into the P. Ramlee Memorial Library.

His return to meet the Eternal is approaching five decades and the majority of us have never known this figure personally. But by looking at his best works, we can recognize this great artist. Without having any modern technology at that time, his ideology and artistic knowledge crossed the civilization of the time where he was able to achieve glory. It is only fitting that he is raised as an icon throughout the ages who will continue to be remembered and always be a point of reference and a source of inspiration for all art children in Malaysia to forge the success he has experienced. Make the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee your idol to continue to work in order to elevate the creative arts industry to the international stage. May his soul be placed among the believers.
