Nov 2014 : PR campaign on TV3 and 8TV

MACP

This year witnessed some of the biggest challenges for MACP especially with regards to collecting royalties from general music users after the commencement of licensing activities by 2 licensing bodies for performers; namely RPM and PRISM since late last year.

Other factors which contributed to the collection problems were the lack of understanding amongst members of the public on how royalties contributed to a songwriter’s livelihood and MACP’s role in protecting the songwriters’ rights.

To address some of these challenges, we are pleased that following discussions with the editorial team of Primeworks Studios Sdn Bhd (PWS), the content creation subsidiary of Media Prima Berhad; the following public awareness programmes focusing on MACP, the livelihood and rights of songwriters were held :-

  1. Malaysia Hari Ini (MHI) @ TV3 featuring a live interview with Johan Nawawi, composer and MACP director on 10 November 2014, which focused on MACP’s role in protecting the rights of songwriters;

  2. 8 E-News @ 8 TV featuring live interviews with 2 top Chinese songwriters and producers; Ang Swee Giap & Tan Yen Hue on 21 November 2014 focusing on songwriters’ struggles and MACP’s role and activities; and

  3. Majalah Tiga @ TV3 featuring Sazali P Ramlee, Saari Amri & Johan Nawawi, which was aired on 24 November 2014 focusing on the late P Ramlee’s son who is dependant on MACP’s royalties to meet his day-to-day living expenses and medical bills and Saari Amri, who remains as MACP’s top 3 highest earnings composers despite the unfortunate motorcycle accident at the peak of his songwriting career in 1996.

The feedback received from the public and music users from these television programmes were positive and eye-opening for many. We thank En Ahmad Izham Omar, En Azhar Borhan and PWS’s editorial team for their support in this PR campaign and hope to continue such efforts with Media Prima and other media groups, to create more public awareness about MACP and its members from time to time.

In the meantime, we hope the performers issue can be resolved amicably without further delay to avoid further negative impact on MACP’s collections.
